Madison is at a crossroads.
Madison population growth brings exciting new opportunities for innovation and a stronger local economy.
Yet we also face a crisis in affordable housing. Our businesses are still reeling from long-term economic impacts of the Covid pandemic. And as a community and country, we must respond to the urgent climate emergency, while acting to decrease racial disparities and social inequality.
As Madison grows, we need to plan for safe walkable neighborhoods, served by transit, neighborhood businesses, and quality schools. We urgently need to expand affordable housing options especially non-market based solutions. We need safe streets for pedestrians, bicyclists and kids going to school. We need a robust public transportation system so we don’t need to own a car. We need economic opportunities so all residents can thrive. We need to build community care and connections.
From 2007-2021, I served as alder in the old District 6. My leadership created new neighborhoods, businesses and places: the Capitol East District, Union Corners, and the historic Garver Feed Mill now the winter home of the Dane County Farmers Market. I was part of the leadership on the Council that initiated a review of police policies and procedures that has led to the CARES program ( the emergency mental health first responders program composed of paramedics and social workers instead of armed police officers) and the Police Civilian Oversight Board.
I’m ready to fill the experience gap on the Common Council and to work with residents in the new District 6 and the city to prepare for future challenges from the lack of affordable housing, to expand our climate resilience, and address racial inequalities and segregation in Madison.
I enjoy working with residents in local government, making sure everyone understands they have the power to shape and make policy through the democratic process. I care deeply about our neighborhoods. I love our city.
My persistence helped revitalize the East Washington corridor, planned and developed McPike Park, promoted the Madison Public Market and the Market Ready program, and rehabilitated the historic Garver Feed Mill. District 6 added affordable housing at Union Corners and on Fair Oaks Ave. After years of work with my city and county colleagues, we found a partner to run The Beacon Day Resource Center.
I am an Anti-Racist and Social Justice Activist. We need to actively dismantle the city’s legacy of segregation and economic disparities for black residents as well as other residents of color. I will work with city and county colleagues to respond to issues of environmental justice like the upcoming F-35s at Truax Field and PFAS contamination of ground and surface water to mitigate the negative impacts. We need to make sure the voices of those most impacted are heard and are helping to shape city policy.
With 14 years of experience as an alder, I have a deep knowledge of city governance, a track record of accomplishments, and a history of service to constituents.
I know how to get things done.
